KINDS OF SCISSORS FOR CUTTING HAIR

There are many different kinds of scissors and shears that can be used for cutting or trimming hair. They may be purchased individually or sometimes in sets. Regardless of the kind of scissors you buy, it is important to choose quality blades and to make sure that your choice fits nicely in your hand. A poor fit can result in cramps from trying to turn your wrist into awkward angles in order to follow the scalp and hair style.

Thinning Scissors

Thinning shears, or scissors, are commonly used to thin out hair rather than cut it completely. By using two jagged blades, they can remove small amounts of hair without altering style. Rather than cutting the hair completely, they simply thin it.

While they look similar to a standard pair of scissors, the blades actually look more like combs. The hair that falls between the teeth of these comb-shaped blades is what is cut, leaving the rest of the hair untouched. The more teeth thinning scissors have, the less hair they cut.

Facial & Mustache Scissors
While the trimming of facial and mustache hair can be done with a normal pair of barber scissors, it is often difficult to fit the longer pairs around the face gently. Generally speaking, most barber scissors come in lengths starting at 5 inches, and most mustache scissors come in sizes around 4 inches.

Mustache and facial scissors are best for getting up very close to the skin and in hard-to-reach places. Some people prefer to use them for side burns as well.

Scissor Cutting Kits
Kits often contain a large selection of different scissors and shears, making them a great choice for the beginning barber or home hair cutting. Sometimes it is necessary to purchase entire kits to get just one pair of scissors that would otherwise be nearly impossible to find in stores or online for sale individually.

Styling Shears & Scissors
These scissors see the most use in a barber shop or salon. They are available in various sizes, allowing them to be used for major styling and detailed touch-ups.

Styling scissors are commonly available with a specialized surface to cause a texture effect as you cut. This greatly reduces the time needed when creating detailed styles or when simply looking for some texture.

Swivel Handle Shears & Scissors
These scissors and shears feature swivel handles that allow the user's thumb to be able to swivel while still in the thumb rest. This allows much greater ease in following the scalp and making small changes to a particular hair style without having to change the grip on the scissors or walk around the person.

BARBER HISTORY

The barber's trade has a long history; razors have been found among relics of the Bronze Age (circa 3500 BC) in Egypt. In ancient Egyptian culture, barbers were highly respected individuals. Priests and men of medicine are the earliest recorded examples of barbers. In early tribes, a barber was one of the most important members, as it was believed that certain evil spirits were able to enter a person's body through their hair, and that cutting it was a way to drive them out. Due to their spiritual and religious beliefs, barbers even performed religious ceremonies, such as marriages and baptizing children. During these ceremonies, they would leave the person/people's hair hanging down until after dancing; they would then cut the hair and tie it back tightly so that no evil spirits could enter and no good spirits could escape.

Before the Macedonian conquest brought the custom of clean shaving, men in Ancient Greece would have their beards, hair, and fingernails trimmed and styled by the κουρευς, in an agora, which also served as a social gathering for debates and gossip.

Shaving, either of the head or face, was not always a voluntary act, for it has been enforced by law in England and elsewhere.

Barbering was introduced to Rome by the Greek colonies in Sicily in 296 B.C., and barber shops quickly became very popular centres for daily news and gossip. A morning visit to the tonsor became a part of the daily routine, as important as the visit to the public baths, and a young man's first shave (tonsura) was considered an essential part of his coming of age ceremony.

A few Roman tonsores became wealthy and influential, running shops that were favourite public locations of high society; however, most were simple tradesmen, who owned small storefronts or worked in the streets for low prices.

Barbers in the Middle Ages often served as surgeons and dentists. In addition to haircutting, hairdressing, and shaving, barbers performed surgery, bloodletting and leeching, fire cupping, enemas, and the extraction of teeth; earning them the name "barber surgeons". The barber pole, featuring red and white spiraling stripes, indicated the two crafts (surgery in red and barbering in white). Barbers received higher pay than surgeons until surgeons were entered into British war ships during naval wars. Some of the duties of the barber included neck manipulation, cleansing of ears and scalp, draining of boils, fistula and lancing of cysts with wicks. In the early 1900's a alternative word for barber came into use, "chirotonsor". Chirotonsor an alternate title for a barber.

They are also quite easy to maintain and can retain their style even after you have washed them. The machine-madesynthetic wigs are reasonably priced as well. They can sometimes work better for you than human hair wigs that are badly made. Handmade synthetic wigs have a higher standard of quality, which look a lot more natural since each strand of hair is tied up that allows you to part it or to adorn it with hair accessories. The custom madesynthetic wigs are somewhat at the high end of the line. They are created according to the specifications you give, which means that they are personalized. Get yourself a wig cap either in cotton or nylon. This will keep your wig comfortably in place. Hold your wig in front of your forehead and proceed to cover on your head. You will notice 2 tabs that you must place at the front of both your ears and settle them on your temple. Make sure that your ears are not caught under the wig. The front area of you wig must start from your hairline while you pull it down at the back area of your head to keep it secure. Wigs have Velcro or hooks to help you to adjust their fit on your head. You can check out the fit of your new wig by wearing it while you are at home to find out if you are comfortable with it. If you have any questions, you could ask a wig expert in a beauty salon to give you the correct advice on how to wear your new wig.

MANUAL CLIPPERS

Hair clippers are operated by a pair of handles which are alternately squeezed together and released.

Barbers used them to cut hair close and fast. The hair was picked up in locks and the head was rapidly depilated. Such haircuts became popular among boys, mostly in schools, and young men in the military and in prisons.

While they were widely used in the past, the advent and reduction in cost of electric hair clippers has led to their largely replacing manual clippers. Some barbers in Western countries continue to use them for trimming. They are also used in the Russian army: when conscripts enter bootcamp, they cut their hair close to the skin, sometimes using manual clippers.

In Greece male students had their heads shaved with manual hair clippers from the early 20th century until it was abolished in 1982. The same practice was used in the military, where recruits had their heads shaved as they set foot in the boot camp. In the 1950s and 1960s a law was implemented in Greece whereby head shaving with manual clippers was to be used as a punishment for young people caught by police, such as teddyboys and prostitutes. This practice was extended to Greek hippies and leftist youths during the 1967-73 military regime. Obligatory hair clipping was abolished in Greece in 1982.

Manual hair clippers are used extensively by barbers in India to give short back and sides haircuts.
